Hineni
Information and registration

August, 2006
Dear Fellow Congregant(s),

Hineni is HaMakom's exciting new healing initiative. Hineni, which means "Here I Am," is for people who want to be involved in helping within our congregation, in forging new connections and creating new meaning in life. We will be developing a corps of volunteers to offer supportive services to others within our community. Hineni will provide spiritually grounded and Jewishly informed support services in the form of compassionate listeners/companions for people in physical, emotional, or spiritual dis-ease of varying degrees.

Surprising to many people, Judaism has a rich and valuable tradition of healing, extending back thousands of years. It includes tribal shamanic wisdom, more recent biblical and Talmudic teachings, and Kabbalistic insights. These understandings and teachings offer a coherent spiritual framework for negotiating many of the challenges, paradoxes and mysteries of contemporary life.

All Hineni volunteers will participate in our training course (or have already done so last year). There will be 3 sessions on traditional Jewish healing, an expansion of the program offered in 2005. The classes include experiential learning, practical energy-based healing tools, and opportunity for discussion. They will be held on November 5, 12, and 19, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., in the library at St. Bede's. Additional information is available on our flyer.

This workshop is available both for those who wish to learn about Jewish healing, and for those interested also in volunteering with Hineni.

Hineni volunteers are also asked to attend a fourth class on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2 – 5 pm. This class will focus on the role and the responsibilities of the volunteers, and we’ll have fun with some practice encounters.

My professional training is in both social work and psychology. I have been working as a psychotherapist and educator for decades, integrating many approaches and perspectives along the way. Now I have the great honor and privilege of spearheading this exciting new program. Your participation could yield personal benefits and will further strengthen our community.

B'shalom,

Karen Kaufman Milstein, PhD, LISW

Surprising to many people, Judaism has a rich and valuable tradition of healing, extending back thousands of years. It includes tribal shamanic wisdom, more recent biblical and Talmudic teachings, and Kabbalistic insights. Many of these understandings and teachings are applicable to contemporary psychotherapeutic and health practices. They offer a coherent spiritual framework for negotiating many of the challenges, paradoxes and mysteries of contemporary life. Much of this tradition is also consistent with cutting-edge Energy Psychology work. The class will include experiential work, discussion and practical tools.

Karen Milstein is a psychotherapist with extensive clinical experience. She has been studying Kabbalah, Jewish views of the afterlife, and Jewish shamanic healing for over a decade. Karen includes health psychology and Energy Psychology approaches in her private practice. She is the author of Attuning to the River of Kabbalah: Playing with Energy and Consciousness.

This workshop is part of HaMakom’s "Hineni" Healing Initiative. We are training a group of volunteers to offer support services to others within our community. If you are interested in volunteering for this new program, definitely plan on participating in this course as part of your training. For volunteers working through Hineni, there will be an additional class from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 2. There will be no charge for this fourth class, in recognition of your contribution to the HaMakom community.
